Chris Tuppen , Advancing Sustainability LLP ,Visiting Professor at University Campus Suffolk (UCS) & Honorary Professor at Keele University Topic of Discussion:   Smart Grids - opportunities for the ICT industry A smart energy network can be defined as a power system that “can intelligently integrate the actions of all users connected to it - generators, consumers and those that do both - in order to efficiently deliver sustainable, economic and secure electricity [or wider energy] supplies.” It will have ICT at its heart. The talk will offer insight into self-healing grids, micro-grids, virtual power plants, demand side management, etc. Paul Findlay, Director of Commercial Operations, Navetas Energy Management Ltd Topic of Discussion: Smart Metering Programme in the UK The government has put in place legislation that by 2020, 53 million smart meters are to be installed into 30 million homes across the UK. This will be the largest UK domestic programme of its kind since the changeover to natural gas in the 1970’s and is estimated to cost over £12 billion. Paul will provide an overview of the smart metering roll out programme along with the challenges facing the industry. He will also provide an insight into the technologies; products and services that Navetas are developing for the energy market that help consumers understand how they use their energy at home. He runs Advancing Sustainability LLP, is Visiting Professor of Smart Technologies at University Campus Suffolk and is an Honorary Professor at Keele University. He was previously BT’s Chief Sustainability Officer. Chris is experienced in developing sustainability strategy, reporting, metrics, target setting, climate change, risk assessment, governance, thought leadership, stakeholder dialogue, media support, public affairs interaction and international collaboration. He has a special interest in the application of smart technologies and in 2011 produced a Smart City Report and roadmap for Bristol City Council. In 2012 he was a founding partner of Smart Anglia ( and is the member of the Green Economy Pathfinder Board of the New Anglia LEP with special responsibility for smart technology. He supported two councils in their submissions to the Technology Strategy Board Future Cities competition, and has been involved in economic impact assessments for Milton Keynes (MK:SMART) and Smart Cornwall. He has also been involved in sustainability impact assessments of the satellite communications sector and submarine telecommunication cables. He chaired the Global e-Sustainability Initiative and the European Telecommunication Network Operators Association’s environmental working group. He was initiator and co-editor of the report SMART 2020 – Enabling the Low Carbon Economy in the Information Age. He has also served on the boards of CSR Europe and BSR (Business for Social Responsibility). He co-chaired the Global Reporting Initiative’s G2 measurement working group and is currently a member of the Executive Board of the Prince of Wales Accounting for Sustainability project, a member of the NHS Sustainable Development National Advisory Group, a member of the BBC Sustainability Advisory Group, a Director of the Aldersgate Group. He is a graduate of Bristol University, receiving a BSc in Chemistry in 1976, followed by a PhD in 1979.
