IM Company, SmartNE, has successfully deployed its Smart Campus platform, WAI2Go, at the University of Birmingham. The platform helps students, staff and visitors find their way around the University’s Edgbaston and Selly Oak campuses. It shows an interactive map with local information consolidated from multiple on-line sources via web, mobile app and kiosk.

The app versions are freely available to mobile users from the Apple and Google stores whilst those at Edgbaston can also view the maps and information on the eight touchscreen kiosks which are sited around the newly completed ‘Green Heart’ space at the centre of the campus. The web version can be viewed here online.

Apart from showing building to building navigation, the interactive map displays locations with dynamic icons that show the least congested PC and study spaces. Opening times for shops and services, university events and real-time travel information are easily found via the map. The solution also enables the Estates and Marketing departments to control kiosk displays, push notifications to users and to control navigation options, with the potential for much more.

Matt Beveridge, Estates Innovation Manager at the University said “The University of Birmingham is committed to delivering a world-class university estate and experience for students, staff, academics and visitors. With a total site area of 110 hectares and more than 200 buildings, the size and complexity of the estate can have a significant impact on first impressions, especially when trying to navigate from A to B. Over the last 12 months, working in partnership SmartNE we have developed a solution that will transform the way people at the University navigate around our campus. In just three days the app achieved 766 downloads and was trending 5th for Navigation in the Google Play store, clearly demonstrating its popularity amongst our students, staff and visitors”.

Ken Guild, Founder of Smart Networked Environments and Technology Director, said “We are delighted to have worked with such an innovative team at the University of Birmingham and we look forward to extending the solution to include indoor mapping and navigation and rolling out more kiosks with our totem partner, XSign”.

WAI2Go is a powerful software platform developed by SmartNE and used by leading universities and research centres, including the European Space Research and Technology Centre, as well as by towns and cities.
