"Delivering Personalised Live TV Sports Experiences"

This presentation will showcase recent work undertaken by BT Applied Research on delivering personalised TV viewing experiences to sports fans using emerging technologies such as Immersive 360 Degree VR Video and new approaches to programme creation and delivery using Object Based Broadcasting. Immersive 360 degree VR video is now being used across a broad range of industries to offer consumers entirely new ‘like being there’ experiences in gaming, sports, music, social media, news, travel, education and retail.  BT Applied Research has been working with BT Sport and a number of external partners to explore the potential of 360 degree VR video and address some of the key challenges in delivering a live immersive experience to sports fans, enabling them to get even closer to the heart of sport. This presentation will provide an introduction to 360 VR video, a brief history of work which led to BT Sport launching their 360 VR video enhanced App in 2017 and what challenges we’re now addressing to further improve the user experience. Object Based Broadcasting (OBB) offers a new approach to programme creation and delivery which enables content producers, broadcasters and viewers to personalise TV programmes. In an object based production the media (videos, images, graphics, music, commentary, data, etc.) used to create a TV programme are kept as discrete media ‘objects’ right up to the point of presentation on a TV, tablet or smartphone. This approach offers flexibility in how a programme can be presented to match a viewer’s personal preference, the capabilities of display devices and the available delivery bandwidth. This presentation will introduce OBB, outline the key capabilities and enabling technologies, and showcase an OBB created multi-screen MotoGP sports programme.
