New, cost-effective “underground cat’s eye” will transform utility asset management

Thursday September 8th at Ordnance Survey HQ in Southampton, delegates at the 2011 Mapping the Underworld (MTU) and Pipeline Industries Guild (PIG) event enthusiastically welcomed the first ever designed-for-purpose, fully integrated underground asset management solution, from OXEMS (Oxford Electromagnetic Solutions).

As Professor Chris Rogers, Principal Investigator of MTU, pointed out, creating a passive tagging system was one of five core initiatives of the Government funded MTU project. The challenge was taken up by a University of Oxford team led by Professor David Edwards. A prototype passive tag was developed and patented, and OXEMS was spun off as an independent commercial undertaking in mid-2010.
